Who is Mariana De la rosa ?

The mezzo-soprano Mariana De la Rosa has distinguished herself as a classical singer and independent producer in Estrie since her arrival in Quebec in 2017. Originally from Mexico, this talented artist's main mission is to introduce her audience to the appreciation of classical singing/opera, as well as to leave a positive social impact through music and her performances.

A glimpse into History

Mariana arrived in Quebec in 2017, to pursue her studies at the University of Sherbrooke's School of Music. In 2019, she will graduate with a Bachelor of Music in classical singing. During her Bachelor of Music studies at Université de Sherbrooke, this talented mezzo-soprano decided to take the reins of her career and become a self-producer. Her passion for opera is so great that she wants to bring it to as many people as possible, through original productions. By using her artistic voice, she aims to leave a positive social message. From her creativity came the concerts Dualité: concert of opera characters (2017), Et in terra pax (sacred music from different eras, 2018 and 2019), L'Eurotour (European classical and folk music, 2020). In September 2021, she collaborated with Sherbrooke visual artist Etienne Saint-Amant. Synesthésie: Musique et couleurs saw the light of day in November 2021. It was a multidisciplinary concert that marked her return to the music scene after the COVID-19 pandemic. Mariana is an artist who takes many social causes to heart, being part of Quebec's vulnerable minorities. The result is her concert Racines transposées: Hommage aux chansons francophones et mexicaines, which premiered in June 2022, in which she recounts her immigration journey through music.

Mariana has had the opportunity to perform at many prestigious festivals and venues, including L'Oasis Musicale in Montreal (October 2018), the Semaine Sherbrookoise de Rencontres Interculturelles (November 2022), the Festival AVEC (June 2023 and 2024), La Brise Culturelle de la Ville de Sherbrooke (2023 and 2024), the Sherbrooke Pride Fière la fête (September 2023) and Espacio México du Consulat Général du Mexique (October 2023). She has also been invited twice to the annual Saint-Sébastien-de-Frontenac concert (2019 and 2023) and performed the Canadian national anthem in front of 3000 spectators at the Phoenix Pride Match at the Palais des sports de Sherbrooke (March 2023). She also sang the Mexican and Canadian anthems at the official Mexican independence ceremony organized by the Consulate General of Montreal on September 15, 2023.

In opera, she was part of the world premiere of Sortilegio (2023) at Montreal's Salle Pierre-Mercure, and played one of two characters in Erik Mailhot's chamber opera Où commence l'infini in June and November 2024.

Among her current projects, Mariana launched her debut album, Rosas y Espinas, in March 2024, accompanied by a 10-concert promotional tour of Quebec and Ontario. This album, a collection of mainly Mexican and Italian pieces, explores all the chapters in the book of love: happiness, despair, friendship, family love and love beyond death. Each piece represents a different chapter in the novel of love, including one composed by Mariana and Mexican pianist Alejandro De la Garza. Through this project, the artist hopes that audiences will recognize themselves in these love stories, while bringing opera closer to everyone, reminding us that love transcends our differences.

A day in the life of a Mezzo

I currently live in Sherbrooke, a quiet city, but beautifully connected to nature. Music is an essential part of my life, which is why I dedicate a large part of my time to it, whether it is perfecting my singing, as part of my projects as an independent artist or my work as a music teacher.

I like to play different instruments, from piano to drums, or even as a DJ at a party, anything to do with music is what keeps me going, it's my profession, my hobby and my space to connect with myself.

There are many other little things that bring me immense joy: I like reading, taking short trips, spending time with my loved ones, and cuddling dogs, I love dogs #teamdogperson 😝.

As a woman, an immigrant and a millennial, social causes are an important part of my daily life. I contribute to this as a French teacher to newcomers to Quebec and through the messages I try to convey in each of my productions. 💜

Other passions also occupy my life. Recently, I discovered the design of stickers and buttons, and learned to make small creations with epoxy. I also love learning new languages. This has not only enabled me to meet many people from different backgrounds, but also to understand more easily the pieces I perform (again, the music 😉 always the music).
