Who is Mariana De la rosa?

Mezzo-soprano Mariana De la Rosa has distinguished herself as an independent classical singer and producer in the Eastern Townships since arriving in Quebec in 2017. Originally from Mexico, this talented artist's main mission is to introduce her audience to the appreciation of classical/opera singing, as well as to leave a positive social impact through music and her performances.

A little history

Mariana arrived in Quebec in 2017, to pursue her studies in Music at the University of Sherbrooke. In 2019, she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Her career as a recitalist began in December 2017, with her first creation, the concert Dualité: Soirée de personnages d'opéra, a concert of opera arias featuring male and female characters. Her productions also include Rosas y Espinas (a concert of Neapolitan and Mexican concert pieces) in March 2018 and in Montreal in October 2018, Et in terra pax (a concert of sacred music from various periods) in August 2018 and April 2019, and L'Eurotour (European classical and folk music) in March 2020. In September 2021, she collaborated with Sherbrooke visual artist Etienne Saint-Amant. Synesthésie: Musique et couleurs saw the light of day in November 2021. It was a multidisciplinary concert that marked her return to the music scene after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mariana is an artist who takes many social causes to heart. In particular, she belongs to some of Quebec's vulnerable minorities. That's why she uses her voice as an artist to raise public awareness of diversity. This idea gave rise to her concert Racines transposées: Hommage aux chansons francophones, presented in June 2022, in which she recounts her immigration journey through music. In November 2022, this concert was chosen to be part of the Semaine Sherbrookoise de Rencontres Interculturelles and the Festival AVEC, organized by the Comité Arts & Culture Jacques-Cartier, in June 2023.

Her debut album Rosas y Espinas is scheduled for release in the near future. The album is a collection of Italian, Mexican, English and French songs, as well as a piece composed by Mariana and renowned Mexican pianist Alejandro De la Garza. The selection of pieces explores all subjects related to love, structured like the chapters of a book. Through this theme, the artist aims to have the audience identify with the situations in the pieces. It's a project that introduces and brings us closer to opera, and also invites us to set aside our differences, because we've all experienced love. With this project, Mariana aims to promote her debut album through a tour of Canada and Mexico.

Upcoming projects include a concert showcasing Mexican culture, as well as revisits of past projects for distribution across Canada and Mexico.

A day in the life of a Mezzo

I currently live in Sherbrooke, a quiet city, but beautifully connected to nature. Music is an essential part of my life, which is why I devote so much of my time to it, whether it's perfecting my singing, my projects as an independent artist or my work as a music teacher.

I love playing different instruments, from piano to drums, from opera to being a DJ at a party, anything to do with music is what keeps me going, it's my profession, my hobby and my space to connect with myself.

There are lots of other little things that bring me immense joy: I love to read, go on little trips, spend time with my loved ones, and cuddle dogs, I love dogs #teamdogperson 😝.

As a woman, an immigrant and a millennial, social causes are an important part of my daily life. I contribute to them through my work in an NPO, and of course, through the messages I try to get across in each of my productions. 💜

However, other passions also occupy my life. I love learning new languages and teaching those I already know. Not only has this enabled me to meet many people from different backgrounds, but it has also made it easier for me to understand the pieces I perform (again, the music 😉 always the music).
